What did you think of "The Calamander Chest"? I've got a Brennan collection I'll be reading for Halloween, but that story isn't in it.
ReplyDeleteI also reread "The Dwarf" recently and hope to reread all of The October Country for Halloween. I hadn't read the story in over 30 years, but it still was as powerful as I remember it.
"The Calamander Chest" was appropriately creepy. A haunted chest (naturally) from which a ghostly finger keeps protruding, disturbing the protagonist.
ReplyDeleteI agree, "The Dwarf" is a powerful piece. Not really horror, but it was in the Horror Gems Vol. 2 I am working through. Bradbury defies categorization, anyway.
Read or watched quite a few of these. The Dwarf is a favorite.

Atmospheric (lesbian) vampire story. Felt very 1970s Hammer-Films-ish to me. Interesting payoff and angle for a vampire story. Bonus points for an obscure Poe reference ('William Wilson.")
